Developing Student Leadership

2010 Symposium

Kent Place School, Summit, NJ
April 16, 4:00pm - April 17, 3:00pm

How do we become intentional about creating ethical student leaders for the future?

In this third annual symposium, representatives from three schools known for exemplary student leadership development will present their programs and share ideas. Our goal is to help participants identify those qualities that are essential to all school leadership programs and to simultaneously see how leadership development might differ depending on school climate, school population and other factors. Participants will take home tools to implement, or improve upon, their school’s student leadership program.

This year’s workshop will feature both high school and middle school programs, all of which have carefully crafted, comprehensive leadership programs that aim to include a broad variety of students.

About the Presenters & Programs

Karen Rezach is director of the middle school and director of the Ethics Institute at Kent Place School. She will focus on Kent Place’s program for development of leadership at the Middle School level.

Keven Fletcher
is chaplain and a leadership coordinator at St. Michael’s University School in Victoria, British Columbia. St. Michael’s has done innovative work pulling together leaders and leadership opportunities from throughout the school, and empowers students in imaginative ways.

Tom Monoco is past Principal at Summit Country Day School in Cincinnati, Ohio. Dr. Monaco developed Summit’s student leadership development program that has endured since his departure three years ago. He is back this year after the
favorable reaction given to his presentation at CSEE’s 2008 Symposium.

Mike Pardee is Director of Character Education at The Kinkaid School in Houston, Texas, and a long time participant in the Gardner Carney Leadership Institute.

David Streight is Executive Director of CSEE. In his presentation he will outline essential commonalities among all the programs featured in CSEE’s past leadership symposia, and offer a roadmap to schools that want to be more intentional in their work to develop leaders.
